Alex Pereira Rejects Ankalaev Fight, Called ‘Chicken’

Alex Pereira appears to be bypassing a fight with Magomed Ankalaev, who is frustrated by the decision, as Pereira considers other high-profile options like a potential matchup with Jon Jones or a rematch with Jamahal Hill.

Alex Pereira seems to be moving past a potential matchup with Magomed Ankalaev. Ankalaev, understandably, isn’t thrilled about this development.

Ankalaev has carved out his spot as the de facto No. 1 contender at 205 pounds. A 13-fight unbeaten streak since 2018 backs him up. Yet, a second title shot remains elusive. His previous attempt against Jan Blachowicz at UFC 282 ended in a split draw. And it appears Pereira isn’t keen on granting another opportunity soon.

On social media, “Poatan” declared, “It won’t be Ankalaev!”—complete with a crying emoji for effect. Just five hours later, Ankalaev fired back, branding Pereira a “chicken.” The drama unfolds!

Pereira is riding high after one of the most thrilling years in UFC history. He’s defended his light heavyweight title thrice against Khalil Rountree, Jiri Prochazka, and Jamahal Hill. Knockouts all around! His KO of Hill was the cherry on top of UFC 300‘s historic event in April.

Why is Pereira dismissing Ankalaev? Maybe it’s the tantalizing options ahead. Jon Jones, the UFC heavyweight champ, has expressed interest in fighting Pereira to cement his legacy further. Plus, there’s potential for a grudge match with Hill if Hill overcomes Prochazka at UFC 311 on Jan. 18.

Meanwhile, Ankalaev has kept busy in 2024, maintaining his undefeated streak with victories over Aleksandar Rakic and Johnny Walker. His UFC record stands strong at 11-1-1 (1 NC).
