Anthony Pettis expresses his disbelief at his recent victory over Roy Jones Jr. in Gamebred Boxing, stating he plans to continue boxing and MMA fights in the future.
Anthony Pettis is still basking in the glow of his recent victory over Roy Jones Jr. in the main event of Gamebred Boxing 4. Though Jones is significantly older than Pettis, he is still one of the greatest boxers of all-time, making this win a monumental upset. Pettis had always planned to try boxing before retiring from fighting sports, and the opportunity to face Jones presented itself at just the right time.
Reflecting on the fight and his game plan, Pettis shared, “It’s crazy. Even the day after, I woke up, like, did that really just happen? It’s Roy Jones. I grew up watching this guy. What he’s done in his career is amazing, so it’s crazy to even say it out loud. It’s insane.” He also credited his coach, Jorge Capetillo, for devising a solid game plan that involved out-pointing Jones rather than attempting to knock him out.
Pettis’ win could open up new avenues for the former UFC lightweight champion, who has struggled in recent years since signing with the PFL. With a 1-4 record in the PFL, Pettis is looking to explore the boxing world further, potentially facing younger, more current opponents. “It’s a bucket list thing,” he said, adding that he would definitely have another boxing fight in the future.
As for his MMA career, Pettis revealed that he doesn’t plan on competing in the PFL’s 2023 season but is open to a welterweight fight later in the year for the promotion. In the meantime, he’s eager to continue trying his hand at boxing, whether it’s with Gamebred or any other interested party. “Right now, I’m open to doing both,” he concluded.
