Belal Muhammad has withdrawn from his UFC 310 title defense against Shavkat Rakhmonov due to a bone infection in his foot, prompting the UFC to seek a replacement for Rakhmonov, who is open to fighting for an interim welterweight title.
Belal Muhammad’s debut title defense? It’s on hold.
The UFC welterweight champ broke the news on Thursday. He’s out of UFC 310’s main event against Shavkat Rakhmonov. Why? A bone infection in his foot. Al Zullino spilled the beans first on Twitter.
Muhammad took to social media, sharing the unfortunate update himself.
“Caught a bone infection in my foot,” he said. “Had to put a PICC line in my arm for IV antibiotics the next six weeks with no physical activity.” Tough break, right?
He added, “Allah’s plan is the best plan. I’m sorry to everyone that were coming to see me. I’ll be back soon. Inshallah.” Faithful and optimistic—classic Belal.
Now, what’s next for Rakhmonov? The UFC’s scrambling for a substitute opponent. But it’s all up in the air if “Nomad” will still fight on Dec. 7 at T-Mobile Arena or if they’ll shuffle things around.
Remember how Muhammad snagged the title? A unanimous decision over Leon Edwards at UFC 304 in July. He’s unbeaten in his last 11 fights, hasn’t lost in nearly six years!
Rakhmonov earned his shot at gold by submitting Stephen Thompson in round two at UFC 296 last December. Impressive, huh? “Nomad” has finished all 18 opponents he’s faced as a pro.
After hearing about Muhammad’s situation, Rakhmonov sent him well-wishes and hinted at fighting anyone for an interim title at UFC 310.
“Wishing Belal a quick recovery,” Rakhmonov tweeted. “We’ll meet when you’re back at 100%. For now, I’m ready to take on any contender for the interim title.” Game on!
