Brendan Schaub Sets Up Grappling Match Between Demetrious Johnson & Bradley Martyn

MMA fighter Demetrious Johnson has responded to influencer and personal trainer Bradley Martyn’s challenge of a street fight, suggesting questions regarding the nature of a street fight and stating that despite being lighter and shorter, his fighting technique and experience could still present a threat, further indicating that the viral discussion could actually lead to an actual contest.

Demetrious Johnson, a consultant at MMA, first intended to enlighten Bradley Martyn when the social media influencer and sizeable personal trainer mocked the idea of being defeated by a 125-pound MMA fighter in a brawl. Subsequently, the issue became popular, sparking talks of a legitimate competition between Johnson and Martyn. Laughing off the idea during Wednesday’s edition of The MMA Hour, Johnson stated it was certainly not something he planned to invest his time in, but given how the situation has escalated online, he felt obliged to address it.

Johnson admitted that he was unaware of Bradley Martyn before Brendan Schaub’s interview with him. Responding to Martyn’s statement, “I bet I can beat you in a street fight,” Johnson seriously questioned the definition of a street fight, pointing out that it could involve a range of weapons and unexpected situations. He strongly urged Martyn to reconsider his definition of a street fight. Johnson shared an anecdote underlining this point, recounting a friend who carries daggers after being attacked by five individuals.

On moving forward with the proposed fight, Johnson referenced Brendan Schaub’s assertion that Martyn would struggle against high-caliber smaller opponents. He mentioned that he’d seen smaller individuals like Bibiano Fernandes, 135-pound former ONE Championship champion, effectively wrestle much larger opponents, attributing this to skill rather than size. Johnson also asserted that he wouldn’t hesitate to physically challenge Martyn and prove his point. However, he also highlighted that he had other responsibilities, like the launching of Fernandes’ gym, a grappling competition, and his family.

Despite the ongoing debate and consistent taunting, Johnson pointed out he harboured no animosity towards Martyn. With an imitation of Conor McGregor‘s voice, he showcased his readiness to face Martyn head-on. Highlighting his confidence, Johnson stated that it didn’t matter if Martyn was bigger and heavier, he could still manage to overpower him using his skills. However, he made it clear that he only wanted an opportunity to prove that being bigger doesn’t equate to being stronger or more skillful. Hence, Johnson remained open to the idea of having an event featuring him and Martyn, with Schaub as the mediator.
