Canelo Alvarez on Tank Davis Disqualification vs Lamont Roach

Canelo Alvarez expressed confusion over Gervonta Davis’ actions during his latest title defense, suggesting that Davis should have been penalized for taking a knee and receiving assistance from his corner, which he believes warranted at least a 10-8 round or disqualification according to boxing rules.

Canelo Alvarez, a veteran of the ring, has witnessed plenty throughout his career. Yet, even he found himself puzzled by the chaos in Gervonta Davis’ recent title defense.

“Tank” managed to hold onto his WBA lightweight title with a majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. last Saturday in New York. The fight was a whirlwind of controversy. In round nine, Davis suddenly took a knee and headed to his corner for a quick towel-down. Why? Turns out, some pesky grease from a recent hairdo was blurring his vision.

Interestingly, referee Steve Willis didn’t count Tank’s knee-taking as a knockdown. No penalties were slapped on him for this peculiar move either. Now, the New York Athletic Commission is poring over the incident. But Alvarez? He’s got his own thoughts.

“In my opinion, it was a draw,” Alvarez shared candidly during an interview with HOT 97. “He took a knee. That should be a 10-8 round, minimum. And having your corner wipe your face? That’s disqualification material! But hey, it’s not my business.”

Section 211.16 of the NYAC’s boxing rules clearly states that coaches and cornermen must stay seated and avoid causing disruptions during rounds. So, did Davis’ team cross the line when they helped him out?

Alvarez isn’t holding any grudges against Davis personally but believes the rules are pretty straightforward here.

“I’m talking about the rules,” Alvarez reiterated. “But again, it’s not my business.”
