Canelo Alvarez Set to Battle Jermell Charlo, Not Jermall, in Upcoming Showdown

Canelo Alvaez is set to face Jermell Charlo in Las Vegas, after initially being expected to fight Jermall Charlo, with Jermell stepping in when his twin brother required more time to prepare for the bout.

Canelo Alvarez is setting the pace for his next bout against Jermell Charlo, twin brother of Jermall Charlo. The face-off is set for Sept. 30 in Las Vegas. On Friday, Alvarez made the announcement of the new match-up on his social media accounts. Earlier, the 32-year-old multi-belt champion was touted to face Jermall Charlo, however, plans changed and now he is ready for a showdown with Jermell Charlo, holder of the undisputed super welterweight championship.

According to ESPN.com Deportes, Jermell Charlo willingly stepped up to battle when his twin brother suggested that he needed additional time to get ready for the bout, notably after taking a two-year break from the ring. Jermall Charlo, who carries the title of the current WBC middleweight champ, last defended his title in 2021 against Juan Macias Montiel. Jermell Charlo, on the other hand, successfully defended his super welterweight titles against Brian Castano in a return match in May 2022. To clash with Alvarez, Charlo will be required to gain 14 pounds weight, setting his mark at the super middleweight level of 168 pounds.

Alvarez recently managed to defend his titles in May after beating John Ryder. This competition marked his second consecutive victory following a previous defeat to Dmitry Bivol in the light heavyweight category. The venue for the impending Canelo Alvarez-Jermell Charlo face-off is yet to be confirmed.
