Chael Sonnen Advises Against Pereira vs. Ankalaev Rematch

Chael Sonnen believes Alex Pereira is making a mistake by seeking an immediate rematch against Magomed Ankalaev after losing his light heavyweight title, suggesting instead that Pereira should move up to heavyweight for better opportunities.

Chael Sonnen believes Alex Pereira is making a misstep. Earlier this month, Pereira lost his light heavyweight title to Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 313. Before that bout, there was chatter about Pereira moving up to heavyweight for a shot at a third UFC title. But after the defeat, an immediate rematch with Ankalaev seems likely. Sonnen isn’t convinced that’s wise.

“I’m a big fan of Alex Pereira,” Sonnen mentioned on Submission Radio. “But I didn’t see anything in that first fight—no illness, no injury—that suggests a different result in round two.” He added, “The fight was four rounds to one. Not overly competitive. Sure, Pereira stopped some takedowns, which surprised us. But it was slow-paced and uneventful.”

Sonnen continued, questioning the learning curve: “Why wouldn’t Ankalaev learn as much as Pereira from their fight? Ankalaev had his takedowns stuffed; he’ll know what adjustments to make next time. Once he gets Pereira on the ground, I doubt judges will see it differently.”

For Pereira, it’s not just about avenging the loss but correcting past mistakes. Poatan recently admitted he faced several issues leading up to the fight and nearly withdrew. He’s confident better preparation will lead to success in the rematch. Sonnen thinks otherwise, suggesting Pereira’s real opportunity lies in heavyweight.

“It’s risky,” Sonnen remarked about the rematch. “People forget how Pereira got to 205 pounds. He didn’t clean out 185; he lost there. Without the belt, he can move freely now.”

Sonnen elaborated, “If we wanted him at heavyweight, losing to Ankalaev could’ve been the ticket. He stopped the takedowns; it added drama. No shame in that. But if he loses twice… embarrassment looms.”

Pereira and Ankalaev are eyeing August for their second clash later this year.
