Chael Sonnen Criticizes Idea of Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz Boxing Match

Chael Sonnen, a multiple-time UFC title challenger and MMA pundit, has expressed his disapproval of the rumored boxing rematch between Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz, calling it potentially the worst idea he has heard in a long time.

Well, rumor has it that Jorge Masvidal and Nate Diaz are gearing up for a boxing rematch. But guess what? Chael Sonnen, the MMA pundit and multiple-time UFC title challenger, ain’t a fan of this idea.

Sonnen didn’t mince words when he expressed his views on his YouTube channel. He said, “This is amongst — if not the worst — idea I’ve heard in a meaningful period of time.” He likened it to the movie Brewster’s Millions, where the goal is to see how fast you can run out of money.

Sonnen’s not shy about his opinion. He’s been around the block, so he feels he’s got the right to assess the situation. And no, he’s not trying to insult anyone.

So, where’s this bout supposed to happen? According to a report from Happy Punch, it’s set for Las Vegas in March. The UFC seems to be okay with Masvidal participating, despite his recent retirement from MMA after his UFC 287 loss to Gilbert Burns.

Remember, Masvidal and Diaz have faced off before. They headlined UFC 244 at Madison Square Garden back in November 2019. That was for the inaugural “BMF” title, and Masvidal came out on top with a doctor’s stoppage win.

But here’s the thing. The bout hasn’t been officially announced yet. Neither competitor nor their teams have confirmed anything, despite inquiries from MMA Fighting.

Sonnen has a few reasons for his take. One is the fight’s timing and location, near UFC 300 in Las Vegas. Then there’s the question of who’s footing the bill. If it’s Masvidal, Diaz, and their promotions, Sonnen’s advice is clear: get out now before it’s too late.

Sonnen’s big question is, “Who’s promoting this?” He’s concerned about the details being reported. A boxing match in March, in Vegas? He sees that as mistake, mistake, mistake. He likens it to baseball rules: three strikes, and you’re out.

The report he read raised three red flags for him. All three points spelled disaster. His advice? Baseball, get out.

Sonnen’s real fear is that Nate and/or Jorge might be putting their own money into this. He doesn’t want them to lose their hard-earned cash. He’s not sure if they are, but based on the info he’s got, he’s just putting it out there.
