Charles Oliveira Dismisses Ilia Topuria; Topuria Responds

Charles Oliveira is focused on pursuing a title fight against current lightweight champion Islam Makhachev, dismissing the idea of fighting featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, who has expressed interest in moving up to lightweight and challenging Oliveira.

Charles Oliveira, the Brazilian MMA sensation, has his sights set on only the biggest names in the sport. Sorry, Ilia Topuria, but you’re not on that list right now.

In a candid chat with ABC MMA, Oliveira shared his thoughts on future matchups. Fresh off a thrilling Fight of the Night victory over Michael Chandler at UFC 309, he’s still a top contender for the 155-pound title. That coveted belt? It’s currently around Islam Makhachev’s waist.

Oliveira and Makhachev have history. They clashed at UFC 280, where Makhachev claimed victory via second-round submission. But Oliveira is itching for a rematch to settle the score. Meanwhile, Topuria—soon to vacate his featherweight title as he transitions to lightweight—has been eyeing a fight with Oliveira to pave his path to Makhachev.

“I think there are a lot of things,” Oliveira mused in Portuguese during the interview (thanks to ABC MMA for translating). “People are talking, but my focus is the title, and Islam’s the champ.” He acknowledged Topuria’s skills, calling him “a very tough guy” deserving respect.

But here’s the kicker: Oliveira doesn’t see a bout with Topuria as a “big fight” right now. His eyes are locked on Makhachev and reclaiming championship glory.

Interestingly, Oliveira mentioned he believes he could knock out Topuria if they ever face off. Talk about confidence!

Topuria didn’t take kindly to Oliveira’s remarks. He fired back on social media, urging Oliveira to “stay quiet.” Ouch.

“Charles,” Topuria quipped, “you’ve got 10 losses: 5 by knockout, 4 by submission, and 1 by decision.” He declared himself the division’s champion and made it clear he’s not asking for anything—he’s here to take charge.

With an impressive 8-0 start in the UFC and recent wins over featherweight legends Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski, Topuria is gunning for two-division champ status. The drama continues!
