Charles Oliveira Uninterested in Paddy Pimblett, Eyes Ilia Topuria Fight

Charles Oliveira is not interested in fighting Paddy Pimblett as he is focused on pursuing a title fight, potentially against Islam Makhachev or Ilia Topuria, rather than opponents ranked below him.

Paddy Pimblett threw out Charles Oliveira’s name as a potential next opponent after his victory over Michael Chandler at UFC 314. However, the Brazilian fighter has other plans. Speaking with Portal do Vale Tudo, “Do Bronx” made it clear that he’s not interested in fighting Pimblett right now.

Oliveira praised Pimblett’s strategy against Chandler but suggested Chandler might have returned too soon after his previous injury. “I’m thinking about fighting for a belt,” Oliveira stated. “There’s no reason to think about guys ranked below me.” He acknowledged Pimblett’s rise and talent but emphasized his focus on higher-ranked opponents.

The lightweight division is a bit tangled at the moment. Islam Makhachev, the current champ, is eyeing the welterweight title, depending on the outcome between Belal Muhammad and Jack Della Maddalena at UFC 315. Meanwhile, Ilia Topuria has entered the scene after leaving the featherweight division to compete at lightweight.

Initially, Oliveira had two names on his radar: Makhachev and Max Holloway for the “BMF” title. But things have shifted. “I want the belt,” Oliveira reiterated. He mentioned considering Holloway if Makhachev delayed his return, but now it’s all up in the air.

Oliveira remains open to challenges but insists on fighting for the title next. “I don’t run from anyone,” he declared. He’s ready to face any top contender, including Topuria, if it leads to a championship bout.

If Makhachev moves up to 170 pounds for a second title shot, Oliveira proposed an interim title fight with Topuria. Despite Topuria’s recent move up in weight class, Oliveira respects him as a formidable opponent.

In conclusion, Oliveira recognized Topuria’s achievements at featherweight and expressed respect for his ambitions at lightweight. It could be an exciting matchup if circumstances align.
