Former bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt is set to fight former UFC flyweight titleholder Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 300 on April 13.
Cody Garbrandt, you’re in for a treat at UFC 300! It’s happening, folks. The former bantamweight champ is gearing up to face ex-UFC flyweight titleholder Deiveson Figueiredo. The date? April 13. The occasion? The UFC’s much-anticipated tricentennial event.
Dana White, UFC’s CEO, spilled the beans on Friday. This news follows an initial report by Ag. Fight.
Garbrandt had been itching for a face-off with Figueiredo. This came after his knockout win over Brian Kelleher at UFC 296. The two ex-champs were supposed to meet earlier, in August 2020. Garbrandt was even planning to drop weight to challenge Figueiredo’s then-held flyweight title. But, alas, illness forced Garbrandt to back out.
Fast forward to 2021. Garbrandt (14-5) made his flyweight debut. It ended with a first-round knockout loss to Kai Kara-France at UFC 269. But the 32-year-old veteran didn’t let that stop him. He moved back up to bantamweight and scored victories over Trevin Jones and Kelleher in 2023.
Now, Figueiredo (22-3-1) is stepping into the ring at 135 pounds. He made a successful divisional debut last December, clinching a decision win over Rob Font. Figueiredo, a two-time flyweight champ, had a stellar start in the octagon. He won nine of his first 10 appearances before getting tangled in a four-fight series with Brandon Moreno from 2020-23. His record against Moreno? A 1-2-1.
The venue for UFC 300? The T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
