Colby Covington Challenges Dustin Poirier, Doubts Fight Will Happen

Colby Covington is planning his UFC return in the coming months but dismisses the possibility of fighting former teammate Dustin Poirier, citing Poirier’s reluctance to face him despite their past animosity.

Colby Covington is eyeing a comeback in the next few months. But don’t hold your breath for a showdown with former teammate Dustin Poirier. Despite their infamous bad blood, it seems unlikely.

During a long Q&A on his YouTube channel, Covington talked about the potential fight. He and Poirier used to train together at American Top Team in Florida. Things went south when Covington left the gym.

Rumors of a fight have been swirling ever since. However, Covington says it’s not happening anytime soon. "No word on the Dustin fight," he mentioned. "He’s been scared of my shadow for years."

Covington claims Poirier knows he can’t win against him. "He can’t even land a lucky punch," Covington taunted. Unlike Jorge Masvidal, who at least gave it a shot, according to him.

Speaking of Masvidal, their feud boiled over at UFC 272 in 2022. Covington won decisively, but the drama continued when Masvidal allegedly attacked him outside a Miami restaurant.

Meanwhile, Poirier is hinting at retirement and plans one last UFC appearance this year. Covington doubts he’ll be chosen as the opponent for that swan song.

"He’ll retire knowing I owned his soul," Covington said harshly. He didn’t mince words, calling Poirier "Louisiana swamp trash."

Regardless of what happens with Poirier, Covington is focused on his own return to the octagon. He wants a full training camp this time around after losing to Joaquin Buckley due to a doctor stoppage from a nasty cut.

Covington’s current gig? He’s an assistant coach for Chael Sonnen on The Ultimate Fighter. Timing matters more than the opponent for his next fight.

"I just want to ensure I’m at my best," he stressed. A full training camp would allow fans to see the "real Colby." Once the UFC finds a suitable big-name opponent, he’s ready for action.
