Cynthia Calvillo has been released from the UFC following a split decision loss to Loopy Godinez at UFC 287. The veteran strawweight and flyweight fighter’s release was confirmed after the algorithm-based UFC Roster Watch account on Twitter showed her as removed from the UFC roster.
Calvillo, 35, made an immediate impact in the UFC after just three professional fights, picking up three wins in a row, including victories over Joanne Wood and Pearl Gonzalez. However, she suffered her first defeat in a close battle with ex-strawweight champion Carla Esparza at UFC 219 in 2017. Calvillo managed to bounce back with two more wins and a majority draw against Marina Rodriguez, but struggled with weight cuts, leading to her moving up to flyweight and securing a win over one-time title challenger Jessica Eye.
Unfortunately, that win marked the last victory for Calvillo in the octagon. She went on to suffer five consecutive losses in a row, including setbacks against Katlyn Chookagian, Jessica Andrade, and Andrea Lee. Despite her razor-close split decision against Godinez, Calvillo ultimately came out on the wrong end, leading to her release from the UFC.
