Dana White: Alex Pereira Could Become World’s Top Pound-for-Pound Fighter at UFC 313

Dana White acknowledged Islam Makhachev as the top pound-for-pound fighter over Jon Jones but hinted that Alex Pereira could claim that spot with a successful defense against Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 313, while Pereira’s willingness to fight anyone, including Jon Jones, adds intrigue to potential future matchups.

When it comes to the heated debate over the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA, Dana White finally admitted in January that Islam Makhachev had surpassed Jon Jones. But let’s be real, his opinion might flip again after UFC 313.

This Saturday, Alex Pereira steps back into the octagon aiming for his fourth straight defense of the light heavyweight title. He faces Magomed Ankalaev in what promises to be a thrilling main event. Since clinching the title with a knockout in 2024, Pereira has delivered three more jaw-dropping finishes. If he can do it again against Ankalaev, he might just claim that elusive top spot in the mythical pound-for-pound rankings.

"He’s one of the biggest stars in the sport right now, if not the biggest," White said on First Take, referring to Pereira. "Ankalaev poses a serious threat to him. This is probably the toughest fight he’s ever had." His team boasts about his takedown defense, saying fans don’t truly know how good it is. Well, we’re about to find out.

"This is a tough fight for Alex," White continued. "If Alex comes out of this like he has every other fight, he might be the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world."

In MMA Fighting’s Global Rankings, Pereira sits at No. 2 behind Makhachev. A standout performance could propel him to the top.

Ankalaev has been among the best light heavyweights for a while and arguably should have faced Pereira sooner. Timing and circumstances delayed their clash until now.

This marks Pereira’s fifth consecutive main event and his seventh headlining spot since joining the UFC roster in 2021.

White praised Pereira for his rapid rise through the ranks, becoming a fan favorite who always delivers action-packed fights. Plus, he’s game to face anyone — even potential bouts at heavyweight.

"Alex is that guy for us right now," White said. "People love his fighting style—he tries to knock your head off." While vacationing in Australia, a fight fell through, and Pereira stepped up without hesitation. He’ll fight anyone, anywhere.

He’s pure violence in motion. Doesn’t duck anybody. He’s moved up a weight class and is open to moving up to heavyweight too.

Pereira has expressed interest in a champion-versus-champion showdown with Jon Jones at heavyweight. Jones seems keen on it as well. Although White has been hesitant before, he didn’t completely dismiss the idea recently.

"He’s willing to fight [Jon Jones]. He’s willing to fight anybody right now," White said about Pereira.

"Jones will fight anybody, too," White added. "Don’t let the internet fool you about Jon Jones."

White mentioned targeting "this summer" for Jones’ return. However, it’s more likely that UFC wants him facing Tom Aspinall next in a heavyweight title unification bout rather than squaring off with Pereira. Anything’s possible though—especially if Pereira dominates Ankalaev and calls out Jones once more as his next challenge.
