Dana White: Chandler Not McGregor’s Return Opponent, McGregor Responds

Michael Chandler will no longer be fighting Conor McGregor next, as UFC CEO Dana White announced that Chandler is done waiting for McGregor, who has been out of action due to injury and is not expected to return until early 2025.

Michael Chandler won’t be fighting Conor McGregor next, according to Dana White.

Chandler has been waiting for almost two years to fight McGregor. After numerous rumored dates and a full season as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter, the bout was scheduled for UFC 303 in June. But, just weeks before the event, McGregor pulled out due to a toe injury. Instead of finding Chandler a new opponent, the main event was changed, with plans to reschedule the fight later.

Except now, it might not happen at all.

On Friday, UFC CEO Dana White told Spinning Backfist that Chandler is done waiting for McGregor. He won’t be McGregor’s comeback opponent whenever “Notorious” returns to the UFC.

“Is Chandler still going to be his opponent?” Robbie Fox asked White about McGregor.

“No. No,” White replied. “…Chandler said, ‘I’m done waiting. I want to fight.'”

Chandler didn’t immediately respond when MMA Fighting reached out for comment.

After pulling out from UFC 303, McGregor assured Chandler and fans that the fight would happen in 2024. However, White insists that McGregor won’t fight in 2024, saying an early 2025 return is more likely. Meanwhile, Chandler hinted at a possible fight announcement earlier this month but didn’t name an opponent.

Chandler hasn’t fought in almost two years since losing to Dustin Poirier at UFC 281. On the other hand, McGregor has been out for over three years following his severe leg injury against Poirier at UFC 264.

**UPDATE**

McGregor responded to White’s announcement via social media on Friday evening. He mocked Chandler and claimed he’s just waiting for a date to be booked.

“Chandler saw that takedown getting stuffed and mauled and officially dipped. Little Fat p*ssy. I’m at the hard rock hotel Florida for the bare knuckle tonight. Got tested earlier today by DFSI. Give me my f*cking date!”
