Dana White Comments on GFL Signing Ex-UFC Champions for New Promotion

Dana White is not concerned about the Global Fight League (GFL) competing with the UFC, as he views it positively for fighters and does not see other combat sports as competition, focusing instead on major entertainment like the NFL and movies.

Dana White has often clashed with other MMA organizations. Yet, this time, it’s different with the GFL.

The Global Fight League is a fresh, team-based promotion. They’ve signed many well-known fighters, including some ex-UFC champs and even a few retirees making a comeback.

Launching in April, GFL has big plans. No broadcast deal yet, but their fighter contracts are turning heads for their generous payouts.

White usually doesn’t hold back against promoters targeting the UFC. But he’s not interested in a spat with GFL. Actually, he hopes it benefits the fighters.

“No, I don’t think [GFL is] blowing smoke,” White commented at the Power Slap presser. “These guys are spending real cash—lots of it. I love it.”

He continued, “Good for the fighters. It’s good for them. I don’t know their business plan, but I don’t see combat sports as my competition.”

Darren Owen, GFL’s founder, aims to shake things up with a team-based format. Fighters will be drafted to cities worldwide.

GFL probably won’t challenge the UFC directly. Owen plans most events on Sundays or Mondays, filling a gap left by the NFL.

Despite employing many former UFC stars, White isn’t worried about losing market share.

White believes the UFC stands alone in its success. Why fret over other promotions when none can match their level?

“My competition is the NFL, college football, soccer, big movies on Saturday,” said White. “Other combat sports aren’t competitors.”
