Dana White Confirms Strickland vs Du Plessis, Updates on UFC Africa

Despite UFC CEO Dana White’s promise to bring an event to South Africa if Dricus du Plessis retained his title, logistical challenges have stalled the plan, although du Plessis is confirmed to face Sean Strickland in a rematch.

Dricus du Plessis might not get his wish after all. The UFC’s first South African champion had big plans. Before winning the middleweight title, “Stillknocks” spoke about hosting a UFC event in Africa. After defeating Sean Strickland at UFC 297, the buzz only grew louder.

Things hit a high note ahead of du Plessis’s title defense against Israel Adesanya at UFC 305. UFC CEO Dana White promised that if du Plessis retained his title, they’d bring an event to South Africa. Du Plessis delivered, submitting Adesanya in the fourth round. But now? That promise seems shaky.

“You know how bad I want this,” White told reporters after a recent Contender Series episode. “I’ve been trying to get this thing done.” The arena situation there is tough, he explained. Pulling it off is a challenge. Africa as a whole presents unique obstacles.

The venue would have to be outdoors, which complicates things. “You know how I feel about that,” White continued. Weather issues like wind and rain are major concerns. Even minor elements—bugs or humidity—could affect fights. Anything unpredictable makes him hesitant.

White has toyed with the idea of a UFC Africa card for years. Back in the “Three African Kings” era with Adesanya, Ngannou, and Usman holding titles, it seemed possible. Yet, it never happened. Now, du Plessis stands as the lone African champion.

While UFC Africa’s future remains uncertain, one thing is clear: du Plessis’s next opponent is set. Despite a wave of new contenders in the middleweight division, White confirmed a rematch with Strickland is on deck for du Plessis.

“Yes, [Strickland is still next],” White said confidently. Du Plessis and Strickland previously clashed for the title at UFC 297 in January. The South African emerged victorious via split decision. Since then, Strickland’s kept his place by narrowly defeating Paulo Costa.

So, while dreams of a UFC event in Africa hang in limbo, fans can look forward to another thrilling showdown between du Plessis and Strickland—wherever it may take place!
