Dana White confirmed that Umar Nurmagomedov and Magomed Ankalaev are the top contenders for upcoming UFC title fights, dismissing Merab Dvalishvili‘s calls for a rematch with Sean O’Malley and supporting Ankalaev’s title shot after his recent victory.
Two title contenders are about to get some exciting news after UFC 308, thanks to Dana White.
First up is Umar Nurmagomedov. He’s been eagerly waiting for his title shot against Merab Dvalishvili. Meanwhile, the champ’s been calling for a rematch with Sean O’Malley. Dvalishvili claimed Nurmagomedov was “scared” and undeserving of a title shot, but it seems Dana White doesn’t share that view.
When asked about Dvalishvili’s comments, White firmly stated that Nurmagomedov is the No. 1 contender. He said “absolutely” when confirming that’s the fight the UFC wants next.
As for Dvalishvili’s hints at other options? Like his calls for another bout with O’Malley? White shut that down quickly, emphasizing “Umar” as the immediate plan for the bantamweight title.
Rumors were swirling about Nurmagomedov possibly fighting Song Yadong. Why? Because Dvalishvili might not be ready until March, which kicks off Ramadan. Nurmagomedov prefers not to fight during this holy month due to fasting commitments.
“Did we announce it?” White quipped regarding Nurmagomedov vs. Song. “Then no [it’s not official].”
In another division, questions arose about Magomed Ankalaev finally getting his shot at light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira.
On Saturday, Ankalaev extended his unbeaten streak to 13 with a unanimous decision over Aleksandar Rakic. His manager, Ali Abdelaziz, had mentioned that if Ankalaev performed well at UFC 308, a title shot was expected next.
White seems to support those plans after watching Ankalaev’s impressive performance.
“He looked good,” White commented on Ankalaev. “He absolutely looked great. I would have to say yes [he gets his title shot].”
With Ankalaev and Nurmagomedov poised as challengers, Pereira and Dvalishvili can start planning their futures once the UFC schedule shapes up for 2025.
