Dana White is strongly opposed to Donald Cerrone coming out of retirement to fight again, emphasizing concerns for his long-term health and suggesting alternative ways to support him financially.
Dana White isn’t thrilled about Donald Cerrone’s potential comeback from retirement.
On Tuesday, “Cowboy” Cerrone announced his intention to return to the UFC for two more fights. Fans and fighters mostly cheered the news, but not Dana White. The UFC CEO was clear in his disapproval of Cerrone stepping back into the octagon.
“I hate it. I hate it,” White said during his post-Contender Series media scrum on Tuesday. “Love him, hate that.”
White questioned Cerrone’s motives. “He retired. For what? What’s left to prove?” he pondered. If it’s about money, White suggested finding another solution. He emphasized the finality of retirement: “They retire because they know it’s over.”
Leaving professional sports is tough, not just financially but emotionally too. The thrill of entering the cage, with a roaring crowd, is hard to let go of. Cerrone is adored by fans for his warrior spirit, but White believes it’s time for him to hang up the gloves.
Cerrone boasts an impressive UFC career with numerous records under his belt. After retiring in 2022, he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2023. Yet, his career ended on a sour note—six losses in his last seven fights.
White is puzzled by Cerrone’s desire to return. If it’s financial, White insists they can find other ways to help him out.
“I’d rather work something else out with him,” White stated. “If it’s about money, then he can do something else.” He pointed out that fighting isn’t a lifelong job and urged planning for the future now, not later.
However, Cerrone seems driven by more than money. With 48 fights across UFC and WEC, he aims for a round number: 50.
White’s main concern is Cerrone’s health and well-being. Without changing White’s mind, “Cowboy” might not get his wish.
“Cerrone shouldn’t think about fighting again,” White advised. “He needs to focus on what’s next.” Although he should’ve planned earlier, White reassures that support is available: “We love Cerrone. We’ll help in any way we can.” And ultimately, White wants to keep him safe from further harm.
