Daniel Cormier believes Jon Jones should be considered undefeated, as he advocates for the removal of Jones’ only official loss due to a disqualification from using 12-to-6 elbows, which are now legal under revised UFC rules.
Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones don’t often see eye-to-eye. However, there’s one topic they agree on: the questionable loss on Jones’ record.
Jones has a 29-fight résumé with two notable blemishes. First, a 2009 loss to Matt Hamill due to disqualification for illegal 12-to-6 elbows. Second, his 2017 knockout of Cormier was overturned when Jones tested positive for banned substances.
While the latter result is set in stone, Cormier believes Jones’ lone loss should be erased. Especially now that UFC Edmonton has revised rules, legalizing those infamous elbows.
“Jon Jones should be undefeated,” Cormier declared at a Q&A in Edmonton. “A 12-6 elbow is crazy… but he’s undefeated.”
Cormier and Jones share a storied rivalry. Despite their second bout being ruled a no-contest, Jones still boasts a win over Cormier from UFC 182.
Their pre-fight hype included insults and even a public brawl. Over time, grudging respect has developed between them. Cormier seems content with this status quo.
“We aren’t great and I don’t think we ever have to be,” Cormier mentioned. “People need to stop longing for the perfect happy ending.”
Jones, now the UFC heavyweight champ, is gearing up to defend his title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 in New York. This fight could be the last hurrah for both legends, though neither has confirmed retirement plans.
Cormier admits he’ll miss watching Jones compete. “He’s beat a lot of guys,” he said. “The game is better with fighters like him in it.”
Yet, Jones’ career hasn’t been without its controversies. Still, his impact on the sport remains undeniable.
