Daniel Cormier’s Concerns About Francis Ngannou’s Boxing Return

Francis Ngannou plans to return to boxing, potentially facing Deontay Wilder, despite concerns from Daniel Cormier about the risks involved, as boxing offers significantly higher financial rewards than MMA.

Francis Ngannou, with an 0-2 boxing record, remains one of the most captivating figures in combat sports. After a short stint back in MMA for his PFL debut, he’s set his sights on boxing once more.

Ngannou has hinted at a possible bout with former heavyweight champ Deontay Wilder. Imagine two titans of power squaring off in the ring! Yet, Daniel Cormier isn’t thrilled about this matchup for Ngannou, especially after his knockout loss to Anthony Joshua.

“There were people picking Francis to beat Joshua,” Cormier remarked on YouTube. “I love Francis, but Joshua didn’t even feel threatened by him.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement for Ngannou’s boxing prowess.

Ngannou will rake in cash, no doubt. But at what cost? Cormier ponders if Ngannou is biting off more than he can chew. Perhaps he’s just that fearless, ready to prove doubters wrong as he did against Tyson Fury.

After losing to Joshua, Ngannou returned to MMA and swiftly defeated Renan Ferreira in his PFL debut. Now, facing Wilder presents new challenges—massive ones.

“People don’t hurt Francis,” Cormier noted. “But when Joshua did, he looked lost.” A worrying sign, considering Wilder’s punching power.

Wilder’s not the most technical boxer out there. He’s riding a two-fight losing streak, but his knockout power is undeniable. Could a fight against Ngannou reignite his career?

Cormier believes Wilder is Ngannou’s toughest opponent yet. “Deontay’s punches may be loopy,” he said, “but they pack a punch that puts people to sleep.”

Despite concerns for Ngannou’s safety, Cormier gets why he’s boxing: the money. It’s simple economics—boxing pays more than MMA.

Ngannou reportedly made bank fighting Joshua and Fury. Facing Wilder could mean another hefty payday. Boxing in Saudi Arabia is lucrative; just ask Jake Paul or Canelo Alvarez.

Yet, is it worth the risk? Cormier wonders if the financial gain outweighs potential harm from another boxing match.

Ngannou’s decision to focus on boxing in 2025 is bold. Only time will tell if this gamble pays off—or if it’s a step too far.
