Devin Haney Issues Statement After Ryan Garcia Defeat, Oscar De La Hoya Reacts

Devin Haney has called for a rematch with Ryan Garcia after losing his unbeaten record, but both Garcia and Oscar De La Hoya have indicated that a rematch is unlikely.

Devin Haney and Oscar De La Hoya? They’re not exactly seeing eye to eye on the whole Ryan Garcia situation. “King Ryan” bagged a thrilling majority decision over Haney last Saturday. The WBC super lightweight champ was left reeling, almost knocked out a few times. But Garcia couldn’t nab Haney’s title. Why? He missed the weight, big time. Kinda puts a damper on an otherwise stellar performance, don’t you think?

Fast forward to Wednesday. Haney breaks his silence on Instagram, his first post-loss statement. He’s not happy about the weight issue. And he wants a rematch with Garcia.

He says, “First off I wanna say.. Alhamdulillah Allah is the perfect planner and I trust his plan no matter what. I came up short but this boxing, and if anyone knows me they know that I am a true competitor, and always wanted to test my skills against the best fighters in the world.”

He goes on, “Ryan, despite the circumstances was victorious that night and that’s fine. I do feel like weight played a role in it but only Allah knows. I would love to run it back and give the fans a FAIR fight within an agreed weight.”

And then he adds, “With that being said.. I am currently enjoying time with my family & friends as well as making up my days of Ramadan. Thank you to all my supporters & everyone involved in making this event happen. After I finish making up my days of Ramadan I will tell you guys what’s next!”

Haney gives De La Hoya a shout-out in his statement. But the Golden Boy Promotions boss isn’t swayed. He comments that Garcia won’t be giving Haney a rematch.

De La Hoya writes, “Good luck with [Matchroom Boxing Chairman Eddie Hearn], but there will not be a rematch. Good luck in your career and good luck with Eddie, a European promoter trying to make it in the U.S.”

And Garcia? He’s not keen on a rematch either. The 25-year-old is planning to move up in weight, way beyond the super lightweight range. Judging by his social media, he might even consider a crossover bout with UFC bantamweight champ Sean O’Malley.
