Diego Lopes Speaks Out After UFC 314 Loss to Volkanovski

Diego Lopes lost to Alexander Volkanovski in a five-round fight at UFC 314 but remained positive, expressing gratitude for the experience and determination to improve and become a champion in the future.

Diego Lopes didn’t snag the featherweight title at UFC 314 on Saturday. But he’s not sulking after going toe-to-toe with Alexander Volkanovski, one of the all-time greats at 145 pounds.

Just under two years since his octagon debut, Lopes found himself in a main event clash. He threw everything at Volkanovski over five intense rounds. Despite landing some solid hits, the judges saw it 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 for Volkanovski.

On Sunday, Lopes took to social media to address his fans. “Always with my head held high, a smile on my face,” he wrote. “I fell short last night… failed in a few things.” Reflecting on his performance, he vowed to work harder and fix those mistakes. Thanking his supporters, he ended with his mantra: “NOTHING HAPPENS.”

Lopes’ performance was nothing short of impressive, especially against Volkanovski. The bout was named Fight of the Night. Volkanovski made history as the first fighter over 35 to clinch a title in a division below 155 pounds in the UFC.

Interestingly, Lopes started slow in round one—a rarity for his usual aggressive style. Yet, he bounced back in the second round, landing a punch that briefly floored Volkanovski.

From then on, it was a battle for every inch inside the cage. Lopes landed significant shots; Volkanovski’s bruised face was proof enough when it was all said and done.

Despite falling short on the scorecards, Lopes showed respect for Volkanovski post-fight. “It was an honor to share the octagon with a guy like Alexander Volkanovski,” he said. But he’s not done yet—determined to come back stronger and claim championship gold someday.
