Dustin Poirier has confirmed that he will fight Benoit Saint Denis at UFC 299, following a brief misunderstanding about the contract terms.
Well, well, well. Looks like Dustin Poirier is gonna face off against Benoit Saint Denis at UFC 299. Yup, it’s happening.
Just a few hours ago, the news was different. The fight was off, or so we thought. Poirier, the former interim lightweight champ, had said, “we couldn’t come to terms” with the UFC on a contract. But then, plot twist!
Suddenly, Poirier’s back in the ring. He dropped a message confirming the fight with Saint Denis is on. Turns out, the whole thing was just a misunderstanding. Go figure.
“Sorry folks, I jumped the gun,” Poirier wrote. Couldn’t get a hold of his manager for a few days, he said. Then he talked to him and Hunter [Campbell]. Oops, my bad, he basically said. Fight’s on!
And then he added, “See you March 9th Miami!” So, it’s set.
Some folks in the know confirmed the news to MMA Fighting on Thursday. So, Poirier is expected to meet Saint Denis in the co-main event of UFC 299. Exciting, right?
The whole thing was a wild ride. Poirier initially said his fight was off. The UFC often makes fight announcements without bout agreements being issued or signed. This time, it bit them in the backside.
Something similar happened on Wednesday. UFC Atlantic City lost its main event after Sean Brady revealed he never officially signed to fight Vicente Luque. He’s got a lingering injury that will prevent him from fighting in March. Bummer.
Poirier’s initial statement indicated he never signed a contract to clash with Saint Denis at UFC 299. Was it a misunderstanding or a quick fix on the terms he was seeking? Who knows. But the deal got done in record time.
Now, Poirier will face Saint Denis in the co-main event at UFC 299. It’s going down on March 9 in Miami. The event is headlined by a bantamweight title rematch between Sean O’Malley and Chito Vera. Can’t wait!
