Former ONE Championship grappler Mikey Musumeci is set to headline the UFC Fight Pass Invitational on December 5 against Felipe Machado, who sees the match as a significant opportunity and believes Musumeci might falter under pressure.
Former ONE Championship grappling champion Mikey Musumeci was the first grappler to sign an exclusive deal for the UFC Fight Pass Invitational. He’ll headline the Dec. 5 show in Las Vegas against Felipe Machado, who’s determined to steal the spotlight during UFC 310 fight week.
"Dana White is starting to look more at the Fight Pass Invitational," Machado said in an interview with MMA Fighting. "And we know when Dana White touches something, it happens." With grappling’s potential, he believes it’s beneficial for everyone involved. Honored to face Musumeci, he’s ready to "spoil the party" [laughs].
Machado, a leg lock specialist and gold medalist in IBJJF Brazilian and South American no-gi championships, claims, "I never feel pressure." In contrast, Musumeci admits, "I have so much f***ing pressure this time," as the event revolves around him.
Machado often welcomes pressure even when it doesn’t exist. Recalling his match against Diogo Reis, a two-time ADCC champion, he promoted himself as an underdog. Despite placing third in the ADCC Trials, he believed in his ability to win. Headlining against Musumeci is a career-defining moment for him.
He thinks the extra pressure could lead Musumeci to make mistakes. Machado has strategies for both scenarios: if Musumeci feels pressured or not. If things don’t go as planned for Musumeci, he might get flustered. Machado’s ready to capitalize on any errors.
"I don’t care about the result of a match," Machado continued. Winning isn’t everything; performing well is his focus. Even in defeat, a stellar performance can elevate one’s status. Sometimes losing with flair beats winning without impact.
Unlike Musumeci, Machado hasn’t signed an exclusive UFC deal yet. A victory would boost his value as a free agent. He’s thrilled about earning more than ever but acknowledges Musumeci’s purse is significantly larger.
"And [the pay] will only grow more and more," Machado said. The event’s success could lead to higher payouts in the future. While his current purse isn’t among the highest, it’s still better than anything he’s earned before.
