Ian Machado Garry is actively seeking a fight with Colby Covington, claiming that Covington is avoiding him by not responding to his challenge, which he believes would help him secure a welterweight title shot.
Ian Machado Garry is tossing the ball into Colby Covington’s court.
The undefeated welterweight contender claims he’s been chasing a fight with Covington. Yet, radio silence from Covington. Garry took to social media to air his thoughts, which you can see below.
“A month ago, I was offered a fight with Colby Covington,” Garry stated. “It took me all of 20 seconds to reply to the email saying, ‘Yes, I’m in.’
“A month later, still no word from Colby. He’s dodging me like the plague, and there’s one reason this fight isn’t happening—his name’s Colby Covington.”
Covington has yet to respond to Garry’s claim. Silence speaks volumes?
For Garry, calling out Covington makes perfect sense. He craves another statement win to lock down a welterweight title shot. Covington sits at No. 6 in the UFC rankings, just ahead of Garry. “The Future,” boasting an 8-0 record in the UFC and 15-0 as a pro, recently snagged a unanimous decision win over former Bellator star Michael Page. Sadly, it lacked fireworks.
Covington (17-4) has been more of a ghost since 2019, although three of his bouts were for the welterweight title. Twice he fell to rival Kamaru Usman, and last December he lost a lopsided decision to then-champion Leon Edwards.
