Ian Machado Garry, who has embraced Brazilian culture and expects local support in his UFC Kansas City fight against Carlos Prates, criticizes Prates for his lifestyle choices and past performances, asserting confidence in his own superior skills and professionalism.
Ian Machado Garry has really dived into the Brazilian culture since joining the Chute Boxe team. He feels the country has embraced him in return.
In fact, Garry expects Brazilian fans to cheer for him in his upcoming UFC Kansas City fight against Carlos Prates. Prates, on the other hand, seems to cling to habits from outside Brazil.
“Look, the dude smokes American cigarettes and drinks Irish whiskey,” Garry said about Prates during media day. “Meanwhile, I’m in Brazil enjoying açaí and paçoquinha. I’m more Brazilian than this guy. His whole country wants me to win.”
Garry’s comments came after being asked about Prates’ smoking habit, which he indulges in before and after fights. Despite Prates’ four knockouts in the UFC, Garry isn’t impressed by his lifestyle choices.
“That’s his life choice,” Garry remarked. “He can do whatever he wants, but come Saturday night, he’ll face someone who’s a complete professional.”
“I’m going to manhandle him in every way possible,” Garry confidently stated. “I’ll manipulate him, and there’s nothing he can do about it.”
Previously, Garry called Prates a “quitter” after reviewing one of his early fights. This didn’t sit well with Prates, sparking a fiery response.
But Garry remains unfazed by Prates’ reaction. He believes he was just analyzing past performances and stands by his comments.
“I watch my opponents closely,” Garry explained. “His team is called the Fighting Nerds—they do the same thing. They’ve never seen me quit.”
“When I saw Prates wave at the ref and say ‘I’m done,’ it showed his true character,” Garry added. “Saturday night, I’ll put him in that position again.”
Despite Prates’ hype since joining the UFC, Garry knows he’s the toughest challenge Prates has faced so far. When comparing their resumes, Garry sees a clear difference in competition level.
“I want to prove I’m the best,” Garry said. “Carlos is up there, but he’s not as awkward as MVP or as fast as Shavkat.”
Prates might have an impressive highlight reel, but Garry isn’t easily swayed until he sees something extraordinary.
“This guy is a one-trick pony,” Garry concluded. “He’s got a left hand, knee, and leg—all on one side. I’ve got everything I need to beat him in every second of this fight.”
