Ian Machado Garry Reveals How He Avoided Loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov at UFC 310

Ian Machado Garry gave Shavkat Rakhmonov a challenging fight at UFC 310, narrowly losing by decision, but remains confident in his abilities and anticipates future rematches, despite stepping in on short notice to replace Belal Muhammad.

Ian Machado Garry faced Shavkat Rakhmonov in what turned out to be the toughest test of his career. Yet, even after the bout, Garry wasn’t entirely sure if his past sparring partner had truly passed this challenge.

In the co-main event at UFC 310, Garry and Rakhmonov clashed over five intense rounds. The stakes were high, with the No. 1 contender spot at 170 pounds on the line. Although the fight was technically rich, it occasionally lacked action. Ultimately, Rakhmonov edged out a win with three 48-47 scorecards, taking his record to 19-0. It marked Garry’s first loss in his 16-fight career.

Despite the setback, Garry remained undeterred and spoke confidently about his performance during the post-fight press conference. “I am humble in victory and defeat,” he stated, “and I do not feel like I lost today.”

“My hand might not have got raised,” Garry continued, “but I came out and fought a giant. I faced the boogeyman and showed he’s human.” On just three weeks’ notice, Garry stepped in to save the event against the division’s most feared fighter.

“There was never a moment he looked like he’d finish me,” Garry added. “I put him in two submissions, took his back, and had fun doing it.” He emphasized that he proved he could compete with the best and was ready for championship rounds.

Garry was a late replacement for UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad, who withdrew due to a foot infection. This change shifted the dynamics for Rakhmonov, who remains poised to face Muhammad next.

Reflecting on how close the scoring was, Garry believes he’s not far behind Rakhmonov in rankings. “I went against the scariest man and nearly finished him,” he said. “That shows my championship mentality.”

The fight saw both fighters engage in grueling grappling exchanges along the fence. Despite Rakhmonov’s wrestling prowess, Garry made him struggle for takedowns—a testament to his striking background.

In a dramatic final round, Garry threatened with a rear-naked choke before Rakhmonov regained control. When asked about a future rematch, Garry predicted they might meet multiple times in their careers.

“I believe we are better than everyone else,” Garry remarked. “I foresee us meeting again—maybe even twice more.” For now, he’s content having silenced critics who doubted his capabilities.

“It’s all about growth,” Garry mused. He reflected on past fights with Neil Magny and Geoff Neal—each showcasing different aspects of his skill set. He’s been taking on opponents others avoid and vows to become a champion one day.

“Today proves how hard I work and my talent,” Garry declared. Though Rakhmonov entered with an 18-0 record of finishes, he didn’t appear invincible this time around. “I’ll be back,” promised Garry, eager for another shot at victory.
