Islam Makhachev Open to Middleweight Fight with Dricus du Plessis, Avoids Alex Pereira

Islam Makhachev, after successfully defending his lightweight title for a record fourth time, is determined to become a double champion and potentially even a three-division champion, despite challenges related to potential opponents in higher weight classes.

Islam Makhachev’s got his eyes on a second title, and he’s ready to go the extra mile for it. After all, ambition knows no bounds, right?

Last Saturday, he defended his lightweight title with a first-round submission over Renato Moicano at UFC 311. That victory marked his fourth defense, breaking UFC records and solidifying his top pound-for-pound status. It’s no wonder he’s considering moving up for another belt.

“I don’t know when it’s going to happen,” Makhachev said post-fight. “But I told them I’m not leaving without a second belt.” Bold words, but can he back them up? He seems confident, though.

The dilemma? Who would he fight at 170 pounds? His buddy Belal Muhammad holds the welterweight title, and they’ve both agreed not to fight each other. Awkward much?

Plus, Shavkat Rakhmonov, the presumptive No. 1 contender, has ties with Makhachev’s team. Not the most appealing matchup either. Complications all around!

Makhachev’s got a wild card up his sleeve, though. “I can be three-division also,” he muses. Just give him the chance! He even mentioned fighting Dricus du Plessis if given the opportunity.

Du Plessis is set to defend his middleweight title against Sean Strickland at UFC 312. The winner will likely face Khamzat Chimaev next, leaving little room for Makhachev in that weight class.

When asked about facing light heavyweight champ Alex Pereira, Makhachev laughed it off. “No, it’s too much,” he chuckled. “I need the [Daniel Cormier] diet program to be 200 pounds.”

For now, it seems Makhachev will remain at 155 pounds. Originally slated to rematch Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 311 until Tsarukyan pulled out due to injury, that fight is off the cards.

UFC CEO Dana White mentioned Tsarukyan needs another fight before earning a title shot again. So who’s next for Makhachev? He doesn’t seem too concerned.

“Not my business,” he shrugged. “Just send me a contract.” Busy fighter wants to stay busy!
