Jake Paul claims victory over Canelo Alvarez after their proposed fight was canceled, as Alvarez signed a new deal and will face Terence Crawford instead, leading Paul to criticize Alvarez and assert himself as the new face of boxing.
Jake Paul is claiming victory over Canelo Alvarez. Why? Their proposed matchup is no longer happening.
All week, rumors swirled about Alvarez facing Terence Crawford in a super middleweight title bout. Then, plot twist: the fan-favorite fight was off, and an Alvarez vs. Paul showdown seemed on the horizon. But wait! Thursday night brought another twist—Alvarez signed a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season’s head honcho, Turki Alalshikh. The Crawford fight? Back on. Paul fight? Off the table.
Friday morning, Paul took to Instagram to share his thoughts. His first statement since the news broke.
“Breaking news: Canelo Alvarez ducked me,” Paul wrote. “He’s now an owned slave with no regard for the pride of the Mexican people who support him on US soil.”
Bold words from Paul, who didn’t hold back. He continued, “It’s not surprising when his whole career he has done nothing for the sport of boxing outside the ring.”
Paul declared himself the “new face of boxing.” In his eyes, you can’t have the biggest fight of 2025 without him.
“When all of your events tank and lose money,” he warned, “you’ll realize who the king of the sport is. 28 years old. Biggest fight in boxing history.”
“My own boss,” he added. “Not owned. 5 years in.”
Paul insisted it’s his era—the era of good, the elephant, and MVP.
Meanwhile, Paul’s Most Valuable Promotions chimed in too. They accused promoters of having boxing media members on their payroll.
In other news, Paul recently faced former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson. It was a lackluster fight but got plenty of eyeballs on Netflix last November.
As for Alvarez? He’s reportedly set to meet Crawford in September as part of that new deal. Before that, though, he’s expected to fight someone else in May—opponent TBD.
And there you have it: a whirlwind of boxing drama and declarations. Stay tuned for more twists and turns!
