UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones is being investigated by police following allegations that he assaulted and threatened to kill a drug-testing agent from Drug Free Sport during a recent visit to his home.
Jon Jones, UFC heavyweight champ, is under investigation. Why? A drug-testing agent from Drug Free Sport claims he assaulted and threatened her life.
This all allegedly happened on March 30. Crystal Martinez, the agent, was at Jones’ place for a routine sample collection. ABQ Raw broke the news first.
Martinez and a colleague showed up at Jones’ around 4 p.m. They were there for a urine sample. Jones was “cooperative at first,” she said, even as she set up her gear, including her cell phone.
Jones and her colleague then “went around the corner” for the sample collection. When they came back, her colleague seemed nervous. Apparently, Jones couldn’t urinate.
Martinez offered to take a blood sample instead. Jones didn’t take it well. He got “tense and puffed up.” Then he started asking them about their money because he was going to sue. And then, she claims, he picked up her phone and started filming them.
The responding officer saw the video. Jones was heard saying, “here’s f****** Jerome and his girlfriend in my garage,” before the video ended abruptly. Martinez alleges that Jones pocketed her phone and got in her face, threatening, “why you f****** people come so early, do you know what happens to people who come to my house … they end up dead.”
Martinez was scared, she told the police. With Jones standing less than a foot away, she wanted to end the test. But she was worried Jones might hit her. UFC athletes can face repercussions for refusing a drug test. She wanted to call for help, but Jones had her phone.
Jones eventually agreed to try the urine test again. He put her phone back on the counter. As Jones and her colleague went back outside, she grabbed her phone and texted her boss, Pierson Laughlin. She told him Jones was threatening her and she couldn’t call because she was afraid Jones would “attack her if he saw her on the phone.”
When her colleague came back with the urine sample, he looked “pale and nervous.” He kept messing up while trying to package the sample.
Martinez thought Jones might have been drunk. She smelled alcohol on him. She filed an internal report and planned to file a police report. Her boss told her to wait until UFC reps talked to her.
Her colleague at the scene didn’t want to file a police report. He was scared of what might happen.
Laughlin contacted Martinez on April 4. He asked why she wanted to file a report. She felt like he was trying to dissuade her.
Martinez wants to press charges against Jones. The police report says a summons will be issued to Jones. The officer tried to reach Martinez’s colleague and boss, but got no answer. He left a voicemail.
Laughlin eventually got in touch with the police. He said he only knew what Martinez had told him and didn’t want to give a statement. Martinez gave the police a written report detailing the alleged incident.
A summons was issued to Jones on April 5. He’s charged with assault and interference with communications for allegedly taking Martinez’s phone. But, according to online court records, no official charges are currently showing against Jones.
UFC was asked for a statement by MMA Fighting about the allegations against Jones. So far, they’ve said nothing.
