UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman and Jorge Masvidal both made media appearances during UFC 246 fight week.
Both men entered 2019 certainly not expecting their respective years to end the way it did. Usman fought Tyron Woodley at UFC 235 in March to capture the Welterweight belt. Usman won this fight quite convincingly. Usman defended his belt against Colby Covington at UFC 245 and won via 5th round TKO in what was one of the most exciting fights of the year.
Masvidal also had a career year. The veteran with 16 years of experience defeated Darren Till in London to kick off the year with a devasting KO. At UFC 239 Masvidal registered the fastest KO in UFC history over Ben Askren. UFC 244 was the icing on the cake for Masvidal where he defeated Nate Diaz for the “BMF” title.
Both men were asked about their next bout and a potential fight with Conor Mcgregor.
“I’m the champion now. They need to come to me. I’ve been asking for fights my whole life. If Conor wants it he can come and get it,” Usman stated. Usman reiterated that anyone who wants a fight has to come to him.
Contrary to Usman, Jorge Masvidal elaborated a bit more on a megafight with Conor McGregor and made it clear he wants the Irishman next.
“Conor has been flirting with a fight with me. If Conor and I get in an Octagon it will be one of the biggest fights in history. With what Conor has been doing and what I’ve done recently breaking records with ESPN, this is a formula for success.”
Masvidal has made it clear that he is chasing checks and whatever brings in the biggest paychecks is what he will be after. When asked about a big paycheck fight with Colby Covington, Masvidal said
“The fight is not on my radar. He got his jaw broken by the guy I’m about to baptize. We haven’t been on the same playing field since we were kids. I’ll prove I’m at a different level when I get my hands on Usman”.
Both men do not have a scheduled fight yet. In the meantime, I’m sure Jorge Masvidal will be collecting big paychecks from the unveiling of his personal Mezcal named “Recuerdo”. You can see the unveiling video below
