Jorge Masvidal Sr., father of retired UFC fighter Jorge Masvidal, has been charged with second-degree attempted murder with a deadly weapon/firearm after a shooting occurred at his son’s residence on Thursday. Masvidal Sr., aged 67, was booked into jail at 1:33 a.m. on Friday morning and remains in holding. Miami-Dade Police said that an incident took place at a house owned by Jorge Masvidal, where a victim was shot in the upper extremities before being taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
The identity of the shooter was not initially revealed; however, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by TMZ, Masvidal Sr. was at his son’s home when he entered into a verbal altercation with a man named Luis Leoncini. Leoncini identified Masvidal Sr. as the person who shot him after the dispute escalated, resulting in gunshot wounds to both of his arms. Masvidal Sr. was arrested without incident, and police later discovered a .38 caliber revolver inside a kitchen cabinet in the home. It is important to note that Jorge Masvidal was not present during the incident and had no involvement in the shooting.
In Florida, second-degree attempted murder charges can carry a potential prison sentence of up to 15 years as well as fines up to $10,000. Jorge Masvidal, aged 38, retired from MMA in April and has since been promoting his Gamebred Bareknuckle MMA card, scheduled for Friday night in Sunrise, Florida.
