Josh Emmett Warns Ilia Topuria of Challenges Against Bigger Lightweights

Josh Emmett, who previously went five rounds with Ilia Topuria, discusses Topuria’s potential challenges and strengths as he transitions to the UFC lightweight division, while also expressing confidence in his own comeback at UFC Vegas 105 after recovering from injuries.

Josh Emmett stands as the sole fighter in the UFC who has gone all five rounds with Ilia Topuria. This gives him a unique perspective on what to expect from Topuria, especially as he ventures into a new chapter at 155 pounds.

Topuria’s only foray into lightweight territory in the UFC was back in 2022 against Jai Herbert. Despite securing a jaw-dropping knockout and earning a Performance of the Night bonus, Topuria faced early challenges when Herbert rocked him on the feet.

There’s no denying that Topuria has evolved since then. Yet, Emmett, with his own history as a lightweight before making waves at 145 pounds, knows that size can be a game-changer in the UFC.

“They could give him problems,” Emmett remarked about Topuria’s chances against bigger lightweights. “He’s shorter and doesn’t have as big of a frame. I think I was actually taller than him or just as tall but much larger framed.”

Despite being more compact than many opponents, Topuria remains undefeated and has delivered several brutal finishes. In recent bouts, he’s taken down legends like Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway, two of featherweight’s finest.

“He’s so well-rounded,” Emmett commented on Topuria’s skill set. “His jiu-jitsu and wrestling background combined with sharp boxing make him formidable. He packs power, but how will he fare against top-tier lightweights?”

Emmett believes Topuria is adapting well to the new weight class. “With proper preparation time and his solid team behind him, he’ll be ready,” said Emmett, confident in Topuria’s potential success.

On his own journey, Emmett aims to reestablish himself in title contention by facing Lerone Murphy at UFC Vegas 105. After taking 2024 off to recover fully from injuries, he’s eager to showcase a revitalized version of himself.

“People wondered why I hadn’t fought since [2023],” Emmett explained. “My close circle knew what I was dealing with. Now, Emmett 2.0 is here, ready for April 5.”

Reflecting on past battles with fighters like Kattar and Mitchell while not at full strength, Emmett feels rejuvenated. “I’m back to 100 percent,” he declared. “April 5 will show everyone what I’m capable of.”

Emmett is determined to defeat Murphy decisively and jump back into the mix. With aspirations of being in Miami the following weekend, he’s focused first on achieving victory on April 5th.
