Kamaru Usman, frustrated by disrespect from fellow welterweights during his injury-related hiatus, emphasizes his eagerness to return to fighting in 2025 and dismisses claims that he is avoiding competition.
Kamaru Usman is fed up with the disrespect.
Once hailed as the top pound-for-pound fighter, Usman hasn’t fought since October 2023. A former welterweight champ, he’s a massive star in the division. Yet, during his downtime, other fighters have been quick to take shots at “The Nigerian Nightmare.” As we roll into 2025, Usman’s had enough.
“Here’s the deal,” Usman declared on his Pound-4-Pound podcast. “As we enter 2025, let’s get one thing straight: no fight means no money. And I love money!” He continued, “We live a certain lifestyle. I’ve got a family. So if I’m not fighting, I’m not earning. People say, ‘Oh, you’re not picking fights.’ I want to fight! But if I’m not healthy, I can’t perform at my best and give you guys the ‘Nigerian Nightmare’ you expect and deserve.”
Injuries sidelined Usman, though he considered stepping in at UFC 310 against Shavkat Rakhmonov. Ultimately, he couldn’t make it happen. However, Usman plans to return this year and has a message for those who’ve been talking trash.
“For anyone thinking I’m choosing not to fight—like these loudmouth fighters saying, ‘Oh, he doesn’t want to fight me!’—shut your mouth!” Usman exclaimed. “I’ve dominated this division with an iron fist for years. When I’m healthy, I’ll be back in there. I can’t wait to fight and shut all of you up. So just be patient, okay? Thanks. 2025’s gonna be great for everyone.”
Usman’s last bout was a middleweight clash with Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294 on short notice. Chimaev edged out a majority decision win.
