Max Holloway vs Nate Diaz, Jon Jones Timeline, Top MMA Names

UFC Vegas 104 was an underwhelming event, while discussions around potential fights like Max Holloway vs. Nate Diaz and Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall, as well as commentary on weight divisions and fighter names, dominated the discourse.

Well, UFC Vegas 104 is in the books and… yeah, we don’t even need to bother. It was more fun than it could have been, but we aren’t going to be talking about that one again anytime soon. And while UFC London this weekend is definitely better on paper, it’s still not the most exciting thing going.

So this week we opened up the questions to whatever tickled your fancy, which means we’re going on a journey, folks. Buckle up.

Max Holloway vs. Nate Diaz

Max Holloway v Nate Diaz has been floated by some but has seemingly received significant pushback with the online community. Is there any downside to making this fight? I struggle to see one.

I’m kind of with you on this one. Don’t get me wrong, this isn’t the fight I’d choose for either man, but I don’t really see the downside either. The current “BMF” champion (for whatever that’s worth) against the creator of the title is a fun storyline, and given how beloved both are, people would line up to see this one. The only downside I see is that Max is a featherweight-turned-lightweight, and I’m not really sure Nate can make 155 anymore.

If I had my druthers, Max would rematch Charles Oliveira, and Nate would do the trilogy with Conor McGregor, but if this ended up happening, I’d be fine with it.

UFC Vegas 104

Compare the Dolidze/Vettori card on paper to Emmett/Murphy card on paper.

I lied. Apparently we will talk about UFC Vegas for a moment.

I said this heading into last weekend’s event and stand by it: UFC Vegas was the worst on-paper card since COVID. At least until UFC Vegas .

The UFC’s next trip to APEX has a much better main event than Marvin Vettori vs Roman Dolidze rematch (Josh Emmett vs Lerone Murphy is sick) but rest of it is … well, it’s not good. Some good prospects and some decent matchups, but like with this weekend, nothing we’ll talk about ever again after event is over.

That’s becoming theme with UFC cards in .

The lightweight division

Do lightweights rock because it’s glory division of MMA and people are more likely try make their bodies fit in weight class? Or is it something more about average physiology causing more people just be that size, so naturally there would be more talent?

There might be little about it being glamor division and thus attracting more people, but mainly it’s latter. It’s simple numbers game and majority of people more naturally fall into -lb category. On top of that, lbs (or, more accurately, lbs walking around weight) is not as competitive as other sizes for athletes. One reasons heavyweight and light heavyweight divisions are so bad is, if you’re naturally bigger person, you’re probably playing other sports that pay better and/or involve less brain injury Football isn’t stealing too many lb-ers from MMA so more can come over.

This also why flyweight is as thin as it is (there are fewer people around world) but generally has high level of talent because where else are athletic dudes who weight lbs going pursue sports?

Yay for statistics.

Robert Whittaker

Robert Whittaker is talking about moving up light heavyweight Light heavyweight generally not very good Despite being undersized how far can Robert go there?

Speaking of bad weight classes!

Alex Pereira fun and makes people forget). But very unsure Whittaker will make headway there.
