Merab Dvalishvili Aims to Break Umar Nurmagomedov Beyond Wrestling

Merab Dvalishvili is preparing for his first title defense against Umar Nurmagomedov at UFC 311, focusing on showcasing his skills and breaking Nurmagomedov’s undefeated record, while also looking forward to potential future challenges and rematches.

Merab Dvalishvili is gearing up for his first title defense, expecting Umar Nurmagomedov to meet the same fate as his previous opponents. The anticipation builds as Dvalishvili prepares to step into the octagon for the UFC 311 co-main event on January 18th. He’s riding high on an 11-fight win streak, having captured the bantamweight championship from Sean O’Malley last September.

Initially, Dvalishvili wasn’t thrilled about facing Nurmagomedov, currently ranked No. 1 at 135 pounds in the MMA Fighting Global Rankings. Yet, now he’s laser-focused on the undefeated challenger, confident that his skills will shine through on fight night. "I’m going to show Georgian wrestling and toughness and break the guy," he told Michael Bisping on the Believe You Me podcast. He thrives against formidable foes, and as long as he’s healthy, he’s ready.

Dvalishvili respects Nurmagomedov’s abilities and acknowledges the challenge ahead. "I’m not expecting an easy fight," he admits. Still, he’s determined to change Nurmagomedov’s undefeated record. His journey to the top has been marked by powerful wrestling and relentless pace, defeating names like O’Malley, Henry Cejudo, Petr Yan, Jose Aldo, and Marlon Moraes.

Against O’Malley, Dvalishvili used grappling to neutralize striking threats en route to a decisive victory. But with Nurmagomedov, he’s set to showcase his entire arsenal. "I’m ready for striking," he said. Unlike before, he plans to keep the fight standing—punching faces and kicking legs—and believes it could be Fight of the Night.

Outside the cage, Dvalishvili is known for his humor, often sharing comedic videos poking fun at rivals. However, this time around, he’s all business. "I’m extra focused," he explained. He feels no need for jokes or antics with Nurmagomedov; it’s serious competition now.

Despite initial reluctance towards this matchup, Dvalishvili understands there’s no need to promote this fight excessively. As champion, he feels it’s up to Nurmagomedov if promotion is desired but warns against disrespectful tactics.

A win over Nurmagomedov would eliminate a significant obstacle for Dvalishvili but doesn’t guarantee smooth sailing ahead. He’s expressed interest in rematches with O’Malley and Yan while eyeing new contenders like Mario Bautista.

"Next fights bring new challenges," he said. Acknowledging rising talents in the top 15 ranks, he’s eager to stay active and face whoever comes next. Excitement fuels him as he looks forward to keeping busy in the octagon.
