Miesha Tate Open to UFC Title Fight Against Julianna Pena

Former UFC champion Miesha Tate is preparing for her comeback fight against Yana Santos in May, aiming for a UFC title shot while navigating the potential challenge of facing her friend Julianna Pena, the current bantamweight champion, amidst her return to the sport after a hiatus in 2024.

As former champion Miesha Tate gears up for her return to the octagon in May, she’s not just focused on defeating Yana Santos. She’s got her eyes set on another UFC title before hanging up her gloves for good.

Despite being one of the most accomplished fighters in women’s MMA history, Tate didn’t step into the cage at all in 2024. The reasons? A cocktail of injuries, motherhood, and expanding her business ventures. But now, she’s back with a vengeance, eager to secure a second consecutive win that could inch her closer to a title shot.

Tate shared with MMA Fighting her ideal scenario: "Win this fight, win another, and then call for a title shot." She wants it all to happen quickly because, as she puts it, she’s here for a good time, not a long time. This year feels like the make-or-break moment for her.

The path to reclaiming a UFC title likely runs through Julianna Pena, the reigning bantamweight champ. Pena is expected to defend her belt against Kayla Harrison later this year, though no date is set yet.

Tate and Pena share a deep friendship and history. They trained together extensively, even teaming up on The Ultimate Fighter, where Pena was Tate’s top pick and went on to win the competition.

Given their shared past, Tate admits it would be bittersweet if she had to face Pena for the title. Yet, fighting someone like Harrison could sidestep that dilemma—though rooting against Pena isn’t something Tate can imagine doing.

"Ideally, I wouldn’t want to fight Julie for a title," Tate confessed. "We have such a rich history and mutual respect." But if fate has other plans? Well, she’s leaving that up to God and the universe.

Back when Tate dethroned Holly Holm in 2016, she knew being champion meant having a target on her back. She never begrudged anyone chasing the same dream—including Pena.

Reflecting on past conversations with Pena: "I’d never deny you a shot at my belt," Tate said. "It’s not personal; it’s about dreams and aspirations."

Before any of that unfolds, Tate must first conquer Santos on May 3. Meanwhile, Pena’s showdown with Harrison looms on the horizon.

Tate acknowledges the buzz around Harrison since joining the UFC but insists facing Pena is an entirely different beast. "Julie’s way better than people give her credit for," she said. Her unorthodox style and sheer tenacity often catch opponents off guard.

Harrison’s judo skills are undeniable, providing her with a clear path to victory. However, Tate won’t ever count Pena out—especially if the fight drags into deeper waters where Pena thrives.

"Kayla’s got incredible skills," Tate admitted. "But if we’re talking about grit and who breaks first? It’s not Julie." Even if Harrison manages to take Pena down, don’t expect an easy ride.

Pena’s resilience is legendary; we’ve seen it against Amanda Nunes. She doesn’t slow down easily—you’d practically have to kill her to claim victory. That’s just how it is.
