Nikita Krylov Hopes for Russian Flag Return at UFC 314

Nikita Krylov, a light heavyweight contender returning to the UFC after over two years, plans to represent Russia with a flag next to his name at UFC 314, clarifying confusion from his last fight due to his previous residence in the disputed region of Donetsk, Ukraine.

Nikita Krylov is gearing up for his return to the octagon at UFC 314, facing off against Dominick Reyes. He expects to have a Russian flag proudly displayed next to his name this time around. It’s been a while since Krylov last fought—over two years, in fact. His profile was missing a flag during his previous appearance in 2023, which stirred quite a bit of confusion.

During the UFC 314 media day, Krylov shed some light on the situation. He mentioned discussions with the UFC about representing Kislovodsk, Russia. “I’ve been living there for a few years now,” he explained, feeling it’s an honor to represent them. This marks a shift from his earlier days when he lived in Ukraine.

Krylov’s past saw him fighting out of Donetsk, a region caught in conflict since 2022. Russian forces took control, and President Vladimir Putin signed a decree annexing it along with other regions. The situation remains tense and unresolved.

This complex backdrop contributed to the confusion during Krylov’s last fight. Now settled in Russia, he’s clear about his representation. “The reason why a few events back there was no flag next to my name is obviously most of my life, I lived in Donetsk [in Ukraine],” he said.

Krylov feels it’s appropriate to have Russia beside his name now. “I’m proud to represent Russia,” he expressed with conviction. Despite his absence from the octagon, Krylov returns on a high note—a three-fight win streak under his belt.

His matchup against Reyes offers a significant opportunity. A victory could propel him closer to a title shot, as their bout opens the pay-per-view main card on Saturday. Exciting times ahead for Krylov!
