Robert Whittaker believes that while Khamzat Chimaev would likely win a hypothetical fight against Alex Pereira, he acknowledges that if Chimaev tires, Pereira’s striking could dominate and lead to a potential defeat for Chimaev.
Robert Whittaker’s got some thoughts on a fantasy bout between UFC light heavyweight champ Alex Pereira and the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev. Quite the matchup, right?
Rumors have been swirling lately about this unexpected clash. Whittaker, who recently tapped out to Chimaev at UFC 308 in October, has noticed all the chatter on social media. He even talked about it on his MMArcade podcast.
“Chimaev [would win], easily,” Whittaker said. Then he backtracked a bit: “Not easily, [but] Chimaev though [is my pick].” Classic indecision.
Chimaev’s next move? He’s eyeing the middleweight title after that intense finish of Whittaker. Meanwhile, Dricus du Plessis is gearing up to defend his belt against Sean Strickland in their February rematch at UFC 312.
Pereira, on the other hand, might go toe-to-toe with top contender Magomed Ankalaev after three successful title defenses in 2024. But here’s the twist—he’s hinted that Ankalaev isn’t next on his list. Plus, heavyweight champ Jon Jones keeps calling him out for a superfight. Drama!
If the UFC somehow makes Pereira vs. Chimaev happen, Whittaker’s backing Chimaev but sees potential trouble for “Borz.” It’s not all smooth sailing.
“I don’t know, unless the [light] heavyweight strength change is a dynamic that Chimaev can’t take [him down]… Chimaev will get the takedown,” Whittaker elaborates. “He’s good at what he does; plays into his strength.”
“But, let’s say hypothetically, [if] Chimaev slows down, gasses a little bit, Pereira won’t. He can strike asleep, dead tired. He’s been doing it his whole life. He’ll kill Chimaev in the standup.” Remember Usman-Chimaev? Usman had some success boxing when Chimaev tired out. With Pereira? It’d be a bloodbath if that happens.”
