UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley expressed his interest in boxing Gervonta Davis, a plan that Davis’ coach, Kenny Ellis, dismissed, stating O’Malley doesn’t have professional punches as an MMA fighter and would be easily overrun by Davis and any other top lightweight boxers.
Sean O’Malley, the UFC bantamweight champion, has expressed his desire to step into the boxing ring with Gervonta Davis. However, Davis’ coach, Kenny Ellis, seems to be dismissive about O’Malley as an opponent for Davis. He suggests that O’Malley wouldn’t represent much of a challenge for his mentee, despite O’Malley’s assertiveness and confidence in facing Davis. Responding to Ellis’ belittling, O’Malley quipped on Twitter, “Lolz [dude’s] 5’2.”
The back-and-forth stemmed from an interview conducted by ES News with Davis’ coach. Ellis commented that if a hypothetical match between Davis and O’Malley were ever to take place, it wouldn’t last long. He was confident Davis, better known as “Tank”, would easily overpower O’Malley, even suggesting the fight would end in the first round. Ellis’ confidence on Davis’ win isn’t just reserved for him, he believes any top lightweight boxer, including Tank, Shakur, and Haney, would beat O’Malley simply because of their boxing prowess. His exact words were, “Tank would whoop his ass, first round. Any top lightweight would beat him — Tank, Shakur, Haney, all them guys would beat him, [because] they’re boxers. All of them would knock him out.”
Despite these dismissive remarks, Ellis denied O’Malley’s capacity as a professional boxer stating, “He’s not a boxer, he doesn’t have professional punches. He’s an MMA fighter, they don’t perfect punches like boxers.” Meanwhile, O’Malley, fresh off a victory over Aljamain Sterling at UFC 292 earlier this month, seems unperturbed. Following his win, the newly crowned champion hinted at his interest in boxing Davis alongside another rematch in the octagon with Marlon Vera.
