Shane Burgos Transitions to PFL Prize Fighter: Prioritizing Financial Rewards in Professional Career

MMA fighter Shane Burgos chooses to sign with PFL over UFC for a chance to make more money and compete for the $1 million prize, believing it will be worth the risk for his family and future.

Shane Burgos had his sights set on the $1 million prize in the PFL finals, but his decision to sign with the organization rather than return to the UFC wasn’t solely based on the potential reward. The 32-year-old veteran found himself at a crossroads in his career after reaching free agency following the end of his previous contract with the UFC. Although he faced a similar situation years earlier and chose to remain with the UFC, money wasn’t the main factor in his decision back then.

Burgos’s mindset shifted when the PFL came calling again last year. He described the deal as “phenomenal” and mentioned that by the end of the tournament, his bank account would look impressive. His manager, Malki Kawa, asked him if he was a UFC fighter or a prizefighter, and Burgos confidently chose the latter. He shared, “I’m fighting for a f****** bag now. I’m not fighting for peanuts. I’m fighting for pro athlete money and that’s what I’m making.” He appreciated his manager’s reminder when making his decision between staying with the UFC or exploring other opportunities.

After signing with the PFL, Burgos received a call from UFC President Dana White, who expressed regret that the organization didn’t try harder to keep him. Burgos appreciated White’s well wishes and was grateful to part ways with the UFC on good terms. Despite the higher earnings, Burgos recognized that he’d still face tough competition in the PFL, with no guarantees of success. He acknowledged that the PFL has “phenomenal fighters” and dismissed the idea that it’s a step down in competition. He said, “Four fights against anyone is hard in eight months. Four fights against guys that are world class, it’s not easy. I don’t expect it to be easy. Anything worth having in life doesn’t come easy so I’ll take the hard way.”
