Themba Gorimbo Prepares for Vicente Luque at UFC 310

Themba Gorimbo is training for UFC 310 without being an official backup, hoping to step in if Nick Diaz or Vicente Luque cannot fight, betting on himself and his readiness to seize any opportunity that arises.

Themba Gorimbo isn’t officially a backup fighter, nor is he being paid to stay ready. Yet, the welterweight prospect is training hard as if he’s set to compete at UFC 310. Why train for a fight that might not happen? Simple. He’s betting on the odds.

Gorimbo believes there’s a chance Nick Diaz may not make it to his fight against Vicente Luque on December 7th. After all, Diaz pulled out of their August matchup for reasons unknown. No ill will here—just playing it smart.

“I’m in Las Vegas, prepping like I’m fighting Luque on December 7th,” Gorimbo told MMA Fighting. “If Diaz doesn’t show, I’m ready. If Luque bails, I’ll fight Diaz. That’s my mindset.”

Leaving Miami wasn’t easy for Gorimbo. He left his family behind, chasing an uncertain opportunity in Vegas. But sometimes, you’ve got to bet on yourself.

“This is calculated risk-taking,” Gorimbo admitted. “I’d be with my family in Miami if I played it safe, but I’m doing this for them. Winning’s essential.”

Facing Luque would be huge for Gorimbo’s career. A fight against a veteran contender is just what he needs right now. But if Diaz steps in? He wouldn’t mind that either.

“I was a big Nick Diaz fan growing up,” he confessed. “Imagine facing your idol-turned-rival! That’d be something.”

For the next month, Gorimbo will endure the grind of training camp. Whether or not the UFC calls him up, he’ll be ready come fight week.

He’s even prepared to step in on 24 hours’ notice if needed. “I’m sure it’s happening with Luque,” he said confidently. “I’ll show up December 7th, no matter what.”

During fight week, he’ll cut weight and make sure he’s ready to say yes to any opportunity. Payment? Not necessary—he just wants his shot at glory.
