Tyron Woodley expressed his frustration with UFC president Dana White through a rap song, “I’ll Beat Yo Ass,” following their contentious relationship and White’s critical comments about Woodley’s fighting style, which led to Woodley feeling undermined despite his successful title defenses.
Tyron Woodley once took a jab at Dana White, and surprisingly, his boss didn’t even notice. Back in September 2018, Woodley had just defended his welterweight title against Darren Till at UFC 228. Despite his winning streak, his relationship with White was rocky due to some of White’s comments after another fight.
After Woodley’s victory over Demian Maia at UFC 214, White criticized the fight for lacking action, blaming Woodley for not finishing it. This led Woodley to express his frustration through music. He released a rap single titled I’ll Beat Yo Ass, aimed squarely at White.
On the Verse Us podcast, Woodley explained, "That’s why I made that song." He couldn’t openly declare his feelings towards White but wanted to. In his words, "You made me look stupid," highlighting how he felt silenced during broadcasts.
Woodley’s reign as UFC welterweight champion spanned from 2016 to 2019. Throughout, he voiced his dissatisfaction with the UFC’s promotional efforts and expressed a desire to fight legends like Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz.
He believed he used his leverage wisely, yet felt the UFC undervalued him. "They thought I was too smart," he shared, emphasizing that he wouldn’t downplay himself for anyone.
Woodley knew the numbers game well. He approached negotiations with insight into others’ deals, which gave him an edge. "I want everything they offered him," he said about Robbie Lawler’s negotiations before their fight.
Woodley knocked out Lawler at UFC 201 to become champion and defended his title against top contenders. However, he claimed the UFC had different plans involving Lawler facing St-Pierre or Conor McGregor instead.
The power struggle intensified when Woodley demanded what was promised to others. "I want every little perk," he insisted, illustrating his relentless pursuit of fairness.
