The former welterweight champion returned to action after a four-year hiatus. He challenged Michael Bisping for the UFC middleweight title in the main event of UFC 217, held on Nov. 4, 2017, at Madison Square Garden in New York.
St-Pierre had a rough start, getting busted open by Bisping. But “Rush” managed to hurt his opponent and secured a third-round rear-naked choke submission, becoming a two-division champion.
The main event between St-Pierre and Bisping was the highlight of a card featuring three title bouts. Cody Garbrandt defended his bantamweight belt against T.J. Dillashaw, and Rose Namajunas challenged Joanna Jedrzejczyk for the strawweight title.
UFC 217 also showcased a welterweight clash between Stephen Thompson and Jorge Masvidal. Plus, Paulo Costa faced off against Johny Hendricks in a middleweight bout.
