Gilbert Burns has been suspended indefinitely following a shoulder injury during his UFC 288 fight and will require a doctor’s clearance to fight again.
Gilbert Burns will require a doctor’s clearance for the shoulder injury he suffered in the first round of his UFC 288 fight with Belal Muhammad. Until he is cleared by a doctor, Burns is suspended indefinitely, according to medical suspensions released on Monday by the New Jersey Athletic Control Board. The board regulated Saturday’s pay-per-view event at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.
Throughout the five-round fight, Burns appeared visibly dejected and ultimately lost a unanimous decision to Muhammad. Muhammad has since been assured of a welterweight title shot against the winner of an upcoming fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington. In total, 14 fighters on the 12-bout card received medical suspensions, with those given indefinite terms needing a doctor’s clearance to fight again.
The full list of medical suspensions from UFC 288 includes Henry Cejudo (30 days with no contact), Gilbert Burns (suspended indefinitely pending orthopedist clearance of left shoulder, pending an X-ray of the left shoulder, and suspended for 30 days with 21 days no contact), Jessica Andrade (30 days with no contact for TKO), Movsar Evloev (14 days with no contact), Diego Lopes (30 days with 21 days no contact), Drew Dober (30 days with no contact for TKO), Kennedy Nzechukwu (30 days with no contact), Devin Clark (14 days with no contact), Khaos Williams (suspended indefinitely pending X-ray of right foot and MRI of left knee, also suspended 30 days with 21 days no contact), Rolando Bedoya (30 days with 21 days no contact), Braxton Smith (30 days with no contact for TKO), Ikram Aliskerov (7 days with no contact), Phil Hawes (60 days with no contact for KO), and Joseph Holmes (suspended indefinitely pending orthopedist clearance of left forearm and suspended 30 days with no contact for TKO).
