Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley will headline a UFC championship doubleheader in Boston, fighting for the bantamweight championship, with other fights featuring Zhang Weili defending her strawweight championship against Amanda Lemos, and previous middleweight champion Chris Weidman returning to face Brad Tavares following a serious leg injury.
Aljamain Sterling and Sean O’Malley are scheduled to headline a championship doubleheader at the UFC’s inaugural trip to Boston. This trip, which is right under the four-year mark of the UFC’s last visit to the city, brings with it great anticipation. The UFC has revealed the poster for UFC 292, set for Aug. 19, in Boston’s TD Garden. Billed as the main event, Sterling and O’Malley are set to face off for the bantamweight championship.
After a victorious title defense against Henry Cejudo in UFC 288’s main event in May, Sterling found himself in an intense staredown with O’Malley in the octagon. O’Malley, also known as “Sugar”, secured his title shot after defeating ex-champ Petr Yan at UFC 280 in a decisive win last October. This stare down set up the eventual showdown between Sterling and O’Malley.
In addition to the main event, the co-main features Zhang Weili defending her recently reclaimed strawweight championship against Amanda Lemos. There is also a key bantamweight division clash on the card between Marlon Vera and Pedro Munhoz. Geoff Neal aims to deal Ian Machado Garry his first defeat in a welterweight showdown, while ex-middleweight champion Chris Weidman returns to the octagon, following a severe leg injury, to go up against Brad Tavares.
