French featherweight William Gomis weighed in at 143 pounds for his UFC 301 bout with Jean Silva, but his fight was cancelled after he vomited backstage and appeared uncomfortable on the scale.
Well, William Gomis didn’t quite hit the mark for UFC 301. There’s a reason for that, though.
On Friday, the official weigh-ins took place. Gomis, the French featherweight, tipped the scales at 143 pounds. He was set to face off against Jean Silva. That’s way below the division’s limit.
Our very own Guilherme Cruz from MMA Fighting was there. He shared that Gomis had a bit of a rough time on the scale. Apparently, the guy threw up backstage just before his weigh-in. Yikes.
Here’s what Guilherme tweeted: “William Gomis did not look good on the scale but still made weight (143 pounds with clothes on) for a featherweight bout. Apparently he threw up moments before weighing in. Commission doctors were following him closely. Jean Silva, his opponent, made weight at 146 pounds.”
You can watch Gomis’ weigh-in. It’s up there, somewhere.
Gomis was clearly not having a good time on the scale. After his weigh-in, he left the room slowly, with some help from the staff. Mike Heck, another one of our MMA Fighting reporters, confirmed the news. Gomis’ fight has been called off. RMC Sport Combat initially reported this.
Gomis was hoping to notch up his fourth UFC win with a victory over Silva. Silva, on the other hand, was aiming for his second win of 2024. He finished off Westin Wilson in the first round earlier this year.
