David Onama will fight newcomer Roberto Romero at UFC 309 in New York, after Romero replaced Lucas Almeida on short notice due to medical issues, with the match being contested at 155 pounds instead of the originally planned 145 pounds.
David Onama remains on the UFC 309 card. Officials confirmed Wednesday that Roberto Romero, a newcomer with an 8-3-1 record, will step in to face Onama (12-2) on short notice at this Saturday’s event in New York. Lucas Almeida was originally slated to fight Onama but had to withdraw due to medical issues, as per UFC reports.
Romero’s management was the first to break the news of his signing. In a tweet, they expressed excitement about Romero joining the UFC ranks, calling him a “beast” ready to showcase his skills in the Octagon. The announcement was met with enthusiasm from fans and followers alike.
Originally set for 145 pounds against Almeida, Onama’s bout will now take place at 155 pounds. This change accommodates the last-minute switch in opponents. Romero, only 24, has made waves in Combate Global, securing six wins out of eight bouts there. Notably, he recently defeated Takahiro Ashida with a first-round rear-naked choke in July.
Onama is gaining traction in the featherweight division. He’s riding high off consecutive victories over Jonathan Pearce and Gabriel Santos and has won four of his last five fights. His rising profile adds intrigue to this weekend’s matchup.
