Alexandre Pantoja, who is set to defend his UFC flyweight title against Kai Asakura at UFC 310, expressed a desire to have challenged the now-retired Demetrious Johnson and hopes to train with him in the future while respecting Johnson’s contributions to the division.
Alexandre Pantoja had dreams of testing his skills against Demetrious Johnson. But with “Mighty Mouse” hanging up his gloves, Pantoja’s now aiming to soak up some of Johnson’s wisdom and prowess.
This Saturday, at UFC 310, Pantoja defends his flyweight title against Kai Asakura. It’s his second time headlining a pay-per-view this year, facing off against the former RIZIN bantamweight champion.
Despite focusing on Asakura, Pantoja can’t help but wonder: Could Johnson’s retirement spark a UFC return? Intriguing thought, right?
“Now he retired, and now UFC can contract him again,” Pantoja mused to MMA Fighting. “That’s all I can think about. Is it possible?”
“Of course, massive respect for him,” he continued. “He’s a GOAT. His impact on my division, on me, on everyone—immeasurable. We owe him respect; it’s how I earn my living. Fighter life! And Johnson? He paved the way. Unstoppable, undefeated for ages—wild.”
Pantoja’s putting his title up for grabs again after snagging it at UFC 290 from Brandon Moreno in July ’23. He’s riding a six-fight win streak, with a recent decision victory over Steve Erceg at UFC 301 in May marking his first title defense.
Having battled many top contenders en route to his title, Pantoja’s eager to train with Johnson someday.
“I just want to train with him,” Pantoja shared. “I’ve trained with the world’s best fighters. Fought them too. If Demetrious is truly done fighting, maybe we can just train together—that’d be something I’d cherish forever.”
